Meeting Unesco Open Education team & Fred Garnett from London Knowledge Lab

Tonight’s learnit lab will have two guests : The Unesco team working on Open Education and Fredd Garnett from London Knowledge Lab. Meeting will be at 6 pm at the “Centre de Recherche Interdisciplinaire, 24 rue du Faubourg Saint Jacques”.

About Unesco’s talk

UNESCO’s mandate is to build inclusive knowledge societies, including the use of information and communication technologies to increase access to quality education allowing individuals to exercise their rights, to develop new capacities, and to improve their lives.

The UNESCO presentation at Learnit Lab will focus on two strategic programmes:

The first concerns Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FOSS-FLOSS). This refers to software that is liberally licensed to grant users the right to use, copy, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code.

The second focus will target Open Educational Resources (OERs) defined as any type of materials used to support education that may be freely accessed, reused, modified and shared by anyone.

Mr. Davide Storti and Mr. Abel Caine will highlight the strength of the UNESCO programmes in assisting Governments to:

· Formulate or promote enabling policies

· Providing online platforms and tools

· Facilitating communities of practice

Dialogic teaching with Prof. Cornett

Tonight we will receive Professor Norman Cornett who will demonstrate his method of dialogic teaching. The event will start at 19.00 at CRI, 24 rue du Faubourg Saint Jacques 75014 Paris. It will be also broadcasted live here. Also a live debate will be organized on twitter- hash tag: #learnitlab

Dialogic encounter will be organized in three sets:

Getting serious about serious games.

Simon Bachelier – Video game projects manager at Universcience (La Cité des sciences et de l’industrie) and a member of the indie game collective One Life Remains, Gave a talk to us on Monday on serious games. Thank you Simon!

A force more powerful - Out of service and replaced by a new game, “People power” I think that in order to get it you should search through other channels *wink, wink*

Power planets - A social game about sustainability, where consequences of your gameplay effect future participants.

In memoriam - Real life meets the virtual one in this innovative game.

A world without oil - “Simulated the first 32 weeks of a global oil crisis. It established a citizen “nerve center”to track events and share solutions. JOHANN SEBASTIAN JOUST - “a no-graphics, digitally-enabled folk game for 2 to 7 players, designed for motion controllers(such as the PlayStation Move). The goal is to be the last player remaining. When the music — selections from J.S. Bach’s “Brandenburg Concertos” — plays in slow-motion, the controllers are extremely sensitive to movement. When the music speeds up, this threshold becomes less strict, giving the players a small window to dash at their opponents. If your controller is ever moved beyond the allowable threshold, you’re out! Channel the power of J.S. Bach, and try to jostle your opponents’ controllers while protecting your own.”

François Taddei’s course now open for Learnit Lab

Good news,

Just got Francois’s permission to open his course to Learnit Lab and les nouveaux étudiants members.

It’s going to be a great venue for collaboration between scientists, engineers and eduhackers.

Some words on the course:

First course will be tomorrow at 18:00, presenting both courses, Open science and scientific discovery games.

Scientific discovery games

Duration: 10x 2h, on Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00 at the CRI (room 2006),
Next course: December 1st.

The success of gamers in games such as Fold-it are each year more impressive.

Last year in Nature they announced that players can make better predictions than the best software.
This year the gamers in 2 weeks solve a problem where scientists had failed for 15 years.
Gamers are even able to propose new heuristics for solving problems.

In this course we’ll propose the study of such games and we’ll work on how to design new scientific discovery games and will contribute to the creation of an international community of students and researchers that create such games. As it was announced in the first workshop on the subject organized last year in the CRI, we’ll organize with the international leaders in this emerging field a student competition inspired by the impact that iGEM had on the field of synthetic biology.

Open science:

Duration: 10x 2h, on Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00 at the CRI (room 2006),
Next course: November 24th.

The digitalization of science affects the way it is done, the way it shared, the way we collaborate or are evaluated.
In this course we’ll invite some of the world leaders in these new approaches and invite the students to discuss how these innovations change they way they learn, collaborate and do research.

Topics to be discussed include
- creative commons (under which license should you protect your creation in different domains)
- open access to scientific publications and data
- crowd sourcing project (for computing such as BOINC or data classification such as galaxy zoo)
- open source software
- open source hardware (eg arduino)
- open wetware.

Our plan of action for the year: Invite 10 world experts in learning, gaming, cognitive science and social entrepreneurship to come and generate projects with us.

In order to assure their arrival, we’re launching the “Wish you were here” project: Vintage postcards with a personal message from the members of the club will be sent to these experts, explaining to them our projects and how they can help us.
